MCNEELY, CHARLES RAYMOND &Quot;MAC&Quot; A resident of Albuquerque for 62 years, passed away peacefully at his home on January 8, 2013 at age 100. Born October 5, 1912 near Farmington, Kentucky, he is survived by two sons, Charles and James, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Patricia, and his wife Barbara. Mac was a graduate of Farmington High School, Chillicothe Business College in Missouri, and the University of New Mexico. He retired in 1973 after 42 years of federal service starting in 1931 with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Kansas City, Mo., followed by service at Fort Peck, Montana and Denison Texas. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy Seabees at Pearl Harbor, Tinian, Bikini, and Okinawa. After the war, Mac returned to duty with the Manhattan Engineer District in Los Alamos where he became Budget and Fiscal Officer. When the Atomic Energy Commission was established in July 1947, he became Deputy Director of Finance for the AEC. He married Barbara Carter on 12/25/1949 and moved to Albuquerque in 1951 when the AEC moved its office there. He served as Deputy Director and Director of Finance until 1968 when he was promoted to Assistant Manager of Administration, a position he held until retirement. After retirement, Mac and Barbara traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada, participated in several Elderhostel Programs, and also traveled to many foreign lands. For 22 years following retirement, Mac worked in the Internal Revenue Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program helping the elderly and the poor with their tax returns. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf which he played regularly until age 95. A memorial service will be held for family and friends at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 8600 Academy N.E. on Thursday, January 17 at 11:00am, Pastor Aaron MacMillan officiating, with burial at Santa Fe National Cemetery the following day. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranch or to a charity of their choice.
