ALTENBACH, MARILYN Marilyn Altenbach passed away quietly at home among family and friends Thursday afternoon, June 5, 2014. Born Marilyn Belding on May 8, 1947 in Scott’s Bluff, Nebraska, she was raised in nearby Mitchell and later in Pueblo, Colorado. She attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins and attained a bachelor’s degree in Zoology. Marilyn moved to Albuquerque in 1972 with her then husband Scott Altenbach and their young son Chris, working in the UNM Biology Department and as a wildlife biologist. She had a special interest in the Jemez Mountain salamander and spotted owls. Although her voice was rarely heard on the radio, Marilyn was well known to music fans for over 40 years as 1/3rd of KUNM-FM’s Home of Happy Feet. An avid musician herself, Marilyn was accomplished on the guitar and concertina and played for many years with the Fabulous Stucco Sisters. She had a big heart, and she lived her life surrounded by a community of loving friends. She will be missed by many, many people. Marilyn is survived by her mother Jean Belding; husband Barry Lauesen; son Chris Altenbach; brother, William Belding; sister-in-law Robbin; nephew Michael, niece Michele; and grandchildren Scott and Eliza. A private memorial gathering will be held for family and close friends.
