COWDEN, JEAN HELEN WALPOLE Age 80, passed away at home on December 10, 2012, with her family at her side. Services will be held on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at 2:00 PM from the United Methodist Church in Santa Rosa, NM. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home. Jean was born in Rock Valley, Iowa on June 2, 1932 to Mildred and Leslie J Walpole. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Guy Tom Cowden, son Thomas Howard Cowden, and brother Robert James Walpole. She is survived by daughter Christy Cowden Brown and husband Matthews Brown, daughter Patricia Cowden Shanklin and husband Souli Shanklin; son Samuel Eugene Cowden and wife Kathy Spreen Cowden. Also surviving are grandchildren Courtney Brown Snyder (Chad), Lauren Brown Stewart (Ryon), Joseph Wesley Brown, Thomas Asa Shanklin (Katy), Souli Ryan Shanklin, Seth Taos Shanklin, Abagale Lee Cowden, Hannah Renee Cowden, Guy Coley Cowden, and one great granddaughter Saige Clarice Shanklin. She is also survived by many special friends and caregiver Dorothy Romero. Jean moved from Iowa to Santa Rosa with her family. She graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1950 and attended the University of New Mexico. She married Guy Tom Cowden on December 30th 1952. They made their home and raised their family on Cowden Ranch. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and devoted much time and energy to the development and maintenance of the Evergreen Cemetery. Jean was involved in every aspect of the family ranching business. She cooked, then hauled, many meals out to the working cowboys. She also hauled her children 13 miles each way to catch the school bus. She was Rooster’s right hand woman for 42 years. Jean was an avid gardener and enjoyed having pretty flowers on her porch, particularly in her later years. She adored her nine grandchildren and supported all their endeavors. GALLAHER, ROY DALE was born on December 16, 1936 in Freer, Texas to Roy Franklin and Lorraine (Bailey) Gallaher. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jack Gallaher; baby sister Gallaher; and his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Katherine (Breece) Gallaher. He was raised in Albuquerque, NM and attended Albuquerque High. He was the quarterback for the Bulldogs, and became a leader in the ROTC. Instead of accepting one of the many Scholarships offered to him, Dale chose to marry the love of his life, Mary K and lead the cowboy life that he truly always loved. He Started as a ranch hand for Albert Harrington on the T.X. Ranch and Mary K was hired as a cook making $ 300 a month. He eventually was able to purchase his own ranch and go into business for himself. Dale enjoyed trading cars, guns, houses, ranches, cattle and airplanes. His favorites were Colt Bisley single action pistols and he was known as Mr. Bisley in the gun collectors world. His also enjoyed flying. Dale was an avid pilot and was know for his love of Cessna 195 Taildragger airplanes. He loved music. Dale played the drums for Glen Campbell in his early days and he could also play several other instruments and enjoyed singing, and especially dancing with Mary K. Above all, his true loves, were his wife and kids. Dale is survived by his children, Bill Gallaher; Gail Armstrong and husband, Dale; Lynn Major and husband, Randell; and Dan Gallaher; his grandchildren, Kelly, Kayla, KC, Kameron, Lane, Sarah Kate, Matt, and Danielle; his great grandchildren, JD Kersey, Abby Kersey, Kanyon Kern, and Braydon Armstrong; and many other loving family members. With Mary K waiting for him to join her for one last dance, Dale passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. A guy truly can die of a broken heart. A Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Montosa Campground Church of the Living Water. Interment will follow in the Montosa Campground Cemetery. DOURTE, HELEN MARGARET Age 91, a resident of Albuquerque since 1949, passed away Tuesday, December 11, 2012. She was born in Gilman, WI on September 29, 1921 to Alois and Margaret (Fleischman) Bauer. Her father was Mayor of Thorp, WI where he owned a dime store that Helen worked in as a young girl. Helen proudly served her country in the Marine Corps during World War II. She loved to crochet and gave over fifty afghans to others. Helen was blessed with good health most of her life; she was able to enjoy life, appreciate the beauty of roses and do some traveling. Most of all, Helen loved her family and devoted herself to being there for them. She was a living definition of a “homemaker”. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Granville Dourte in 2008 and brother Lawrence Bauer. Helen is survived by her children, Margaret Saunders and husband, Leigh, Patricia Bruner and husband Will, Richard Dourte and wife Christine, Kathleen Arvizu; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and her brother Richard Bauer and wife Jean. BUNTING,JAMES SHENAN Age 85, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born on October 9, 1927 of parents St. Elmo and Hilya Bunting in Detroit, Michigan. His youth through the depression of the 1930′s and early 1940′s was spent earning or trying to earn money to help a struggling family of seven. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, he tried to enlist in the Navy at age 14, but his parents would not consent. He tried again in 1945 and at seventeen he joined the Navy and was accepted in the pilot training program. After the war he pursued a career in purchasing and contract management and prior to retiring he spent 5 years in Spain for the Air Force, which he greatly enjoyed. After retirement, he volunteered at Presbyterian Hospital and New Mexico Senior Olympics. He was an active member at the Church of the Risen Savior where he was a Eucharistic Minister, greeter and usher. Throughout his life he enjoyed oil painting and drawing and was very talented, winning several awards for his artistic endeavors. Other activities he enjoyed included reading, listening to music, and dancing. He was blessed by having two brothers and two sisters, all of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving son Patrick Bunting and his fiancee Stephanie Tucker; daughter Linda Bunting; daughter Lisa Bunting Baca; son-in-law Dan Baca; granddaughters: Hadley, Caitlin, and Alana; grandson Kevin; and close friend Helen Sedillo. Jim was cremated according to his wishes and his ashes will be buried at a later date. The family of James Bunting wants to thank his extended family at the Church of the Risen Savior and all his friends for their prayers and support. We are also extremely grateful for support, counsel, and care provided by the staff of Vista Care Hospice. Jim is profoundly missed by all those that knew him, especially his family and close friends. He was a kind, loving and thoughtful man who touched the lives of those who had the pleasure to know him. We love him very much and will miss him always, but we know he rests in eternal life in Heaven.

HOWE, DIANA HOLTERMAN (1935-2011) MEMORIAL Diana lost her fight with colon cancer on December 16, 2011 in Albuquerque, NM. She is buried with her late husband, Tommy Howe, in the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Diana was born in Espanola, NM on June 6,1935 to Leslie W. Holterman and Laura Wolf Holterman. She attended Santa Fe schools where she was active in band, choir, and chorus singing major parts in the schools musical productions. Diana graduated from Santa Fe High in 1953 and attended the University of New Mexico where, in 1957, she earned a degree in music education. She was then employed by the Bernalillo school system as a music teacher. Music, cats, plants and flowers were Diana’s first loves. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law with granddaughter, Danielle Culver, of Albuquerque and a loving sister, Joana Pickens and husband Jimmy of Abilene Texas.

NAYLOR, HARRY WILKIN Age 90, died Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at Lovelace Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Sugar Tree Ridge, OH, son of Miriam and Roy Naylor, at the age of 20 he joined the Army. On his 21st birthday, he sailed beneath the Golden Gate Bridge on a troop ship headed to the war in the Pacific. After the war he married Win in Columbus, OH on August 10, 1947. He was a Funeral Director in Ohio and Arizona before moving his family to Albuquerque in 1968 where he was employed by Strong-Thorne Mortuary until he retired at the age of 80. Harry was an active member of Ridgecrest Christian Church (RCC). One of his life’s joys was taking road trips visiting family and friends. Harry and Win traveled to nearly every state in the union. He was preceded in death by his brother; Donald Naylor of Hillsboro, OH and his sister; Dorothy Benson of Albuquerque, NM. THRIFT, YVONNA CHILNESSIE was born in Simon, Oklahoma on August 17, 1924. She passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on November 27, 2012 in Mesquite, Texas. Her unusual name came from an Indian girl that Yvonna’s mother had befriended and liked so much that she gave the same name to her daughter. Always one to give her own brand of nicknames to everyone she knew, Yvonna became known as “Y-vie”, “Auntie Y”, or just plain “Y” to many who loved her. In addition to her parents, George and Laurah McGonagill of Carlsbad, New Mexico; Yvonna was preceded in death by her husband of over 52 years, Raymond Thrift of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and by her brother, A.G. McGonagill of Carlsbad, New Mexico. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Kitty Thrift of Richardson, Texas; and by her daughter and son-in-law, Elayne and Dennis Snyder of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Grandchildren and their spouses are Stacey and David Warner of Liberty Hill, Texas; Jeffrey and Heather Thrift of Wylie, Texas; Autumn and Darin Wade of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Julie Thrift of Richardson, Texas. Great-grandchildren are Katy and Dylan Warner; Cayden Thrift; and Hunter and Mackenzie Wade. Yvonna is also survived by her brother and his wife, George and Madeline McGonagill; and by her sister, Laura Meade, all of Carlsbad, New Mexico, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. Lifelong members of the Church of Christ, Yvonna and Raymond lived the majority of their marriage together in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and they were members of the Montgomery Boulevard congregation there. They were fortunate to have Harvey Porter as their minister and mentor for a number of years. Yvonna was devoted to her family above anything else, and she spent her life enjoying the satisfaction of loving her husband and teaching her children to love God, to be responsible citizens, and giving them the freedom and encouragement to “think big” and follow their dreams.
