Evangeline C. Bernal (Vangie), age 84, passed away May 14, 2016 in her own home joining her recently deceased husband, Juan Bernal, and son Gerald Burch, after surviving with Parkinson’s disease for almost a decade. Recently, as she rested quietly in her bed, one of her great grandchildren climbed into bed with her to give her a wet kiss directly on her lips. Smiling while being affected by a little case of the “allergies”, she whispered. “He got me. I don’t know why he loves me so much.” She may not have known why, but we do. As she told us, she lived a good life; she made good choices; she had no regrets. Vangie was an amazing woman always beating the odds, whether in life or at the casinos. They gave her 10 days to live, be she decided on over 5 weeks, giving her family an amazing gift . . . time to love and hold her a little longer before finally being able to let her go. Vangie was born on August 18, 1931 to Desiderio and Cleotilde Gallegos in Anton Chico, New Mexico and became one of 14 children. Vangie helped support her family by working in the fields picking cotton and sewing parachutes for the military while still managing to graduate from Santa Rosa High School in 1949 at the age of 17, something she was so proud of and unusual in the 40’s. Soon after, she met and married Charles Burch Sr. Vangie divorced in 1955 leaving her a single mother to four children. Determined to make a good life for her and her children, she worked to support them during a time when it was near impossible to exist without the support of a man. Vangie was passionate in all things, whether it be in love, her belief in never giving up on loved ones who are struggling, or hitting the big one at the slots! This was never so obvious as when she stopped at the local Dog House in Albuquerque, Vangie started working at the Piggle Wiggly, known for her friendly smile and generosity, even turning a blind eye when little ones would sneak off with a goodie. After her retirement, always needing to stay busy, she started teaching aerobics with the Senior Citizen’s Center and taking computer classes. Vangie loved being surrounded by family, particularly her children and husband. Being a living example for her children in her relationship with others, she raised her sons to be good men who treat their women with love and respect and her only daughter to be an independent woman capable of working to support her family while also raising children and doting on her husband. Vangie adored her grandchildren taking them shopping for dresses, to eat ice cream, riding on her banana bike to the local park, and watching and applauding them as they awkwardly performed at the annual Christmas Eve talent show. But, mostly, she loved being with her Juanito, sitting on the front porch (Un Rinconcito en El Cielo) watching the people walking by and solving the world’s problems, or even just arguing with him. Our mother and grandmother is and always will be much loved and greatly missed. We know Vangie finally opened that darn door and is dancing in her red dress with her chulito (Juanito) while listening to a good band playing ranchera music. She is survived by her children, Charles Burch Jr. and wife Katie, Edward Burch and wife, Kay, her only daughter Joann Mares and husband, Ray, Albert Bernal and wife, Yvonne, and Alvin Bernal and wife, Sharon, all of Albuquerque; her 13 grandchildren, Carlos Burch, Shalene Andujo, Stephanie Lange, Jason Mares, Edward Michael Burch, Janelle Aragon, Jacqueline Velasquez, Leticia Bernal, Jessica Bernal, Marisa Bernal, Natasha Bernal, Mariah Bernal, and Alexander Bernal; 19 great-grandchildren; siblings, Flora Gallegos, Eddie Gallegos and wife, Angie, Manuel Gallegos and wife, Mildred, Nadine Chavez and husband, Alex, and Mary Lou Romero and husband, Paul. Steven I. Sacks, M.D, January 30, 1947 – May 21, 2016. Steven spent 25,315 days on this earth. He was here for 3,316 weeks and approximately 832 months. And he LIVED them all. Steven loved fine food, exquisite scotch, cherry prime time cigars, music, history, math, art, theatre, antiques, politics, jewelry, nuts, See’s chocolate, his friends and his fur babies. As a renowned psychiatrist, he cared for his patients with compassion and his dry, sarcastic wit. He saved thousands of lives from the depths of despair, depression and mental illness. Steven was enjoying his retirement and had many plans for his future. After months of preparation and endless tests to assure a good outcome, he entered the hospital for a routine hip replacement on May 12, 2016. Due to multiple medical errors, he died of sepsis at 12:15 on May 21, 2016. The sun will not shine as brightly again. The sky will not be as blue. His humor and amazing laughter will no longer fill the room. His outrageous behavior will no longer cause us to blush. There will be no more bagels, cream cheese and lox on Sunday mornings. No more long political discussions over lobster or prime rib. Those of us who love him best and were honored to share many of those thousands of days with him will be forever changed by his love. Steven was an enigma all wrapped up in a riddle until the very end. He entered medical school to avoid going to Viet Nam and died on Armed Forces day. He would have gotten a real kick out of that one. His life was ended by the very profession he gave his life blood to serve. The irony of that fact leaves us breathless. Now, Heaven shines brighter as he greets the ones he loved who crossed that rainbow bridge before him. Peligro, Cecelia, Adobe, Myrna, and Gimmel sit on his lap once again. He will dance with the one he loved so deeply and sing in the glee club in the sky. Fly away, Stevie. In the arms of the Angels, may you find the peace you so richly deserve. Your love is woven into the fabric of our lives. We will carry you with us every step we take. Save us a seat… We are not far behind you. Until we meet again.. Stevie is survived by his family of choice. His best friends forever, Judy Talley and Pat Laurenzano, his pseudo children, Kirstin and Lance Stillwell, Trish Scott, and Eric Talley. He claimed two grandchildren, Jorleigh Rider and Elijah Scott. He deeply loved his cousin, Marcia Cohen. He is also survived by his dog, Mishkin and his true loves, Irish Rose, Mia Amore, and Murphy. A simple celebration of Steven’s life will be held at 5:30 P.M. on Friday, May 27, 2016 at Strong-Thorne Chapel, 1100 Coal Ave SE, Albuquerque. If you would like to make a donation in Steven’s name, he would appreciate it being made to a chihuahua rescue organization. All of you can make him happy by voting for Hillary in the upcoming election. To view information or leave a condolence, please visit www.danielsfuneral.com. Mary B. Aguilar

Aguilar, Mary B. Mary B. Aguilar passed away Sunday morning, June 5, 2016, while surrounded by her family. She was born to parents Estevan G. Baca and Griselda Baca in Socorro, NM. Her great-grandparents, Estevan and Catalina Baca, were prominent citizens of Socorro and were instrumental in the critical land donations that helped create The New Mexico School of Mines (today New Mexico Tech), in which Mary took great pride. A long time resident of her beloved Socorro, Mary attended Mt. Carmel School and graduated from Socorro High School. As a young girl, Mary took great interest in her father’s shorthand and moved to Los Angeles to attend Webster Business College. She then returned to Socorro where she married Joe V. Aguilar and worked as a stenographer, a teller at First State Bank, and as a secretary at New Mexico School of Mines. Then in 1961, Mary began a cherished career as a legal secretary, where she was able to apply the lost art of shorthand and could type faster than pretty much anyone in the County. She started this career with attorney Eldon Douglas and in 1968, when Douglas was appointed chief prosecutor, Mary began her career with the District Attorney’s Office for both Democrat and Republican officeholders, a career that would endure for more than two decades. Outside of the office, Mary enjoyed many activities, she participated in a number of bowling leagues, was a member of the Socorro Woman’s Golf Association, and played countless rounds of golf at her favorite golf course, New Mexico Tech. But of the many things Mary enjoyed she most loved dancing to her favorite music at the San Miguel Fiestas and the Capitol Bar where she could be found dancing until the last set was played. Mary was married to Joe V. Aguilar for 32 years, who preceded her in death in 1981. She is survived by her two daughters Benita Alexandre and Joanna DeBrine and husband Earl; her three beloved grandchildren, Earl III, Jordan and Joseph DeBrine; sister, Kathleen Quinn (husband Bill); brother, Max Baca; and her very close friends and cousins James and Mary Ann Lucero. A beloved community member who loved Socorro, Mary was a dynamic woman who is undoubtedly now having a wonderful time dancing with her favorite dance partner, Joe. The Holy Rosary will be recited on Saturday, June 11, 2016, at 9:30 am, followed by the Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 am at San Miguel Catholic Church, 403 El Camino Real, Socorro, with Father John Anasiudu as Celebrant. Burial will take place at San Miguel Catholic Cemetery following the service. Pallbearers will be Earl E. DeBrine III, Joseph E. DeBrine, James K. Howell, Roy S. Hendrickson, James R. Lucero and John T. Chavez. A reception will be held immediately following the burial at the Capitol Bar. To view information or leave a condolence, please visit www.danielsfuneral.com.
